Since we first kicked off the Glasgow user experience book club in February the momentum has been growing and the group has been becoming stronger.

The Glasgow UX book club at tictoc

The meeting at August was the best attended yet, with the 12 free places available selling out within a couple of days. We had been reading Steve Krug’s Don’t make me think and although we often veered off topic the discussion was interesting and often enlightening.

More than just the value of discussing UX topics I thought it was great to connect with what was a surprisingly varied group of people. I had worried that the book club would end up being web and designer-biased but was surprised to meet developers, analysts, students who were all interested in brining user-centered design into their work.

At the last meeting we made suggestions about books we’d like to read and added those to the wiki page. Last weekend I put together a survey of book options and emailed it to each of the attendees and those who has previously registered their interest in the book club.

The clear winner with 4 votes was Designing Interactions by Bill Moggridge. It’s a hefty 800 pages, but also contains lots of illustrations and is apparently well presented in bite sized pieces. I’m looking forward to reading the book and have already ordered my copy through the book club’s Amazon affiliate link.

The next meeting is being held at Good creative on the 8th of October. They have a funky space round the corner from Central Station, which I hope is more convenient for those traveling over from Edinburgh or elsewhere. There will be 12 free places available for the meeting, which will be available from 11am on the 10th of September. See the wiki page for more information and I hope to see you at the meetup!
